The event proved to be a fantastic opportunity for our team, as we connected with HR professionals, industry experts, and thought leaders who are shaping the future of the human resources field.

This year’s conference theme, “HR Evolve,” perfectly aligned with our objective at GRS Recruitment to stay ahead of emerging trends in talent acquisition and workforce management.
The conference provided a great platform to showcase our expertise in recruitment and discuss key trends like employee retention, hybrid work models, and HR technology. We engaged in insightful conversations that helped us better understand the evolving needs of HR and how we can offer innovative and effective solutions.

Additionally, the event reinforced our commitment to supporting organisations with tailored recruitment solutions. We indeed enjoyed exchanging ideas on how to navigate today’s changing HR landscape and are excited to continue helping companies adapt to new challenges in talent acquisition.

At some point in our professional careers, we all have changed positions. When that time comes, how do you resign in a way that is professional and allows you to leave on good terms? Resigning from a job is a tense and stressful experience. Over time you have built relationships with your co-workers and supervisors so resigning can naturally cause anxiety: how will they react to the news? What if they respond negatively and get mad or upset?

Instead of worrying over a possible adverse reaction, remember that there are many simple things you can do to ensure that you resign on the best terms. Giving adequate notice, writing a resignation letter, and expressing gratitude towards your employer for the opportunities they provided you with are great ways to ensure that you leave a good impression behind. Below we share the best tips on what not to do and do so that you can resign gracefully.

Note: Resigning on good terms is especially important in smaller job markets, such as Cyprus and Malta. Maintaining positive relationships with past colleagues is essential because of three reasons. First, you’ll want to be able to ask your previous employer for a favorable recommendation before you leave. Second in smaller professional networks, it is easy for your reputation to precede you, so you don’t want your new employer to have a negative impression of you before you even begin working for them. Finally, you may end up returning to an old employer or may re-encounter former supervisors at your new job. Therefore, creating and maintaining positive working relationships ensures that you always have positive work experience.

When to Resign From a Job

Knowing when to resign from a job is crucial for both personal and professional growth. If you feel unfulfilled, undervalued, or find that your work no longer aligns with your career goals, it might be time to move on. Persistent stress, lack of work-life balance, or toxic workplace environments are also strong indicators that it’s time to resign. Additionally, if there are no opportunities for advancement or your current role no longer challenges you, seeking new opportunities elsewhere can be the right step. Ultimately, resigning should be a decision made after careful consideration of your well-being and future aspirations.

How to Resign From a Job

To resign professionally, schedule a private meeting with your manager and clearly state your intention to leave, giving the standard two-week notice or the period specified in your contract. Express gratitude for the opportunities you had, remain positive, and offer to help with the transition. Follow up with a formal resignation letter outlining your last working day. Maintain your work ethic during the notice period, and leave on good terms to preserve relationships and your reputation.

Do Quit in Person

Whether you have a good or bad relationship with your manager, make sure you quit in person. Your boss has invested time and resources into your growth so resigning through email, leaving a letter on their desk, or through human resources can make you seem ungrateful. An in-person conversation is the best way to show your respect and appreciation.

Bonus Tip: Prepare your manager by sending an email saying that you’ll like to discuss with them your future at the company. By giving them time to process the possibility of your resignation, they’ll be less reactive as they won’t be blind sighted (blindsided) by the news.

Don’t Tell Your Colleagues First

We often have closer relationships with colleagues than with our bosses. Therefore, it can be tempting to share the news with your closest colleagues before telling your boss. Co-workers knowing before management can be harmful as this can create office rumours notifying your boss of your decision before you can even contact them for a meeting about it.

Indirectly learning about your resignation can cause your manager to feel disrespected and lead to a heated conversation when you finally share the news with them. You will damage your reputation and hurt your chances of getting a positive recommendation.

Do Give Adequate Notice

Everybody has heard of the two-weeks’ notice, but some companies may require more so make sure to check your contract to ensure that you are following company policies. Replacing staff can be a costly and a time-consuming procedure, so the more notice you give, the easier the hiring process will be for your employers.

Bonus Tip: If you are someone in a supervisory or managerial role, you’ll want to submit your resignation with a 4-6-week notice. Giving sufficient notice to the hiring manager will provide them with enough time to find an experienced replacement that can handle the more complicated responsibilities of a managerial role. If your substitute is the right fit, you’ll ensure that your previous employer doesn’t have to rush the hiring process to cover your workload and avoid receiving the blame for any hiring mishaps due to you giving them too short of a notice.

Don’t Let out Your True Feelings or Thoughts

Giving your resignation is not the time to tell your boss or colleagues how much you disliked them. Both your resignation letter and exit interview should focus on the positive experiences you’ve had, such as how much the role has taught you. Speaking your mind will feel great at the moment, but you will quickly regret it. Not only will you lose their recommendation, but also your image as a professional.

Keep your resignation letter short and straight to the point. You only need to include that you are resigning, when your last workday is, and a brief statement expressing your appreciation for the opportunity.

Do Offer to Train Your Replacement

If you have the opportunity, then offer to help train your replacement. By offering your assistance, you will be able to accomplish various things. First, by training your replacement, you will make the transition into your old role smoother and quicker. The quicker your replacement can fulfil your role’s responsibilities, the faster your former team regains some of their lost productivity that resulted from your resignation. Moreover, it will show your employer that you appreciated working with them and leave them with a positive impression of you.

Bonus Tip: Even when you can’t directly train your replacement, you can still write them a comprehensive guide that highlights the critical tasks, contacts, and advice. Both your company and replacement will certainly appreciate your generosity.

Don’t Forget to Say Goodbye

Your direct teammates are often the closest people to you at work, so they deserve to hear directly from you about the change in your career. Before leaving take a few minutes to send a farewell email that highlights some of the positive experiences you’ve shared with each of the team members. Make sure to include your contact information so that you can keep in touch.

Resignation Letter Sample

Dear [Manager’s Name],

Please accept this letter as formal notification of my intention to resign from my position as [job title] with [company name]. In accordance with my notice period, my final day will be [date of last day].

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to have worked in the position for the past [time in employment]. I have learned a great deal during my time here and have enjoyed collaborating with my colleagues. Additionally, I will take a lot of what I have learned with me in my career and will look back at my time here as a valuable period of my professional life.

During the next [notice period in weeks] I will do what I can to make the transition as smooth as possible and will support in whatever way I can to hand over my duties to colleagues or to my replacement. Please let me know if there is anything further, I can do to assist in this process.

Thank you again for the opportunity to be a part of [Company Name]. I wish you and the entire team continued success.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Gracefully quitting your job is a process that requires thought and execution. It becomes even more difficult when you are part of smaller job markets such as Cyprus and Malta. If you wish to do what is best for your career, you must ensure that you have a smooth transition out of your old company.

By showing respect and gratitude towards your managers and company, you can leave any position with your reputation and network intact.

COVID-19 came as a shock to everyone and resulted in 2020 being a very tough year for many of us at both a personal and professional level. With a lock-down beginning in 2021, it has meant many people have felt unable to plan for the next year making some feel anxious, scared, and insecure but these are all-natural feelings given the current circumstances.

Some inside strategies to help you take control of your career during the pandemic are the following:

Keep your CV and LinkedIn Profile Up to date

Your LinkedIn profile as well as your CV should be updated and include all your recent experiences and education focusing on those you built during these unprecedented times. This could include a course you did online during lockdown or even a webinar you participated in. If you are not sure how to effectively put together a CV or not sure how to present your experiences and education in a way that will be attractive to hiring managers, GRS will be more than happy to help you.

Try a new industry

Some industries were impacted more than others during the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, the Hotel, Tourism sector and events industries have been devastated by COVID-19. If you are in one of these industries, it may be worth looking into a sector that thrived through this pandemic such as Forex or Gaming especially if you have languages. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try something new!

Make sure you are indispensable

Let your direct line manager know that you care about the state of the business you are employed by, by asking how the company is performing. This will not only show your genuine interest in the business, but it will also give you an opportunity to ask if there is any additional support you can give to other teams or projects in these difficult times. By showing your initiative to help others within the company it will also help to make you indispensable.

Fill the skill gap

Now is the best time for you to invest time in improving your skillset and earning a competitive advantage. During the pandemic, many training organisations and individuals are offering discounts and incentives to take up training webinars and there are some great offers available to help you develop new skills. This skill may be a new language, a marketing course or even a creative writing course. Every new skill potentially opens a different door for your career.

If you are looking for a new opportunity or even a change in your career path in these unusual times, contact us at GRS Recruitment so one of our team members can reach out and discuss what opportunities may be available.

What is the tax benefit for expats in Cyprus?

Expats are entitled to certain tax benefits for working in Cyprus. Article 8 (21) provides that the tax exemption of €8.550 and 20% (whichever is the lower) of the remuneration from any employment exercised in Cyprus by an individual who was resident outside Cyprus the tax year before the year of commencement of employment in Cyprus is exempt from income tax.

On 15th December 2020, an amendment of the article was put in force.

What is the purpose of the amendment?

The purpose of the amendment is to extend the application of the 20% tax exemption for expats working in Cyprus. The amendment of the article applies until the tax year 2025.

Prior to this extension, only those commencing employment in Cyprus from 2012 and onwards were qualified for this exemption. Individuals were able to claim the exemption for a period of 5 years up to tax year 2020.

The extension of the tax benefit now allows individuals to apply for a 5-year period given that the commencement of their employment is between 2012 and 2025.

What is the Tax in Cyprus for Expats?

The taxation system in Cyprus is one of the more beneficial in comparison to other countries, making it an attractive destination to both companies and individuals.

As an expat living in Cyprus, you can benefit from the following exemptions:

20% or MAX of €8,550 tax exemption

The Tax Relief entitlement was due to expire on 31/12/2020, however, according to our sources, the government is now in discussions regarding the extension of this 20% tax benefit for expats for five more years since they have seen an influx in people from abroad coming to Cyprus for employment as a result of this program. By the end of 2020, we should have an official announcement from the government on whether or not this will continue.

For someone who was not residing in Cyprus prior to taking up employment in Cyprus is exempted from tax and this would apply from January 1s from the year following the year of the beginning of employment. The lower of 20% on the annual emoluments or EUR 8,550 (whichever is lower) is the amount that is exempt for the aforementioned individuals.

This exemption can only be benefited from for a maximum of 5 years until the year 2020. It is now under review to be extended and we should have an announcement soon.

50% exemption on the tax for expats:

When an individual’s income exceeds EUR100,000 per annum starting from the actual start date of employment and 12 months onwards and was not a tax resident in Cyprus prior to the commencement of their employment, 50% of the gross emoluments are eligible to be deducted from taxable income.

This exemption can only be benefited from for a period of 10 years from the year of employment.

Which tax exemption are you entitled to as an expat in Cyprus?

It is important to emphasize that no individual is entitled to both exemptions simultaneously.

When submitting your tax returns, it is important to be able to distinguish whether or not you are considered a resident of Cyprus or not as it makes a significant difference in terms of your claims.

How do you answer the toughest interview questions?

Building a strong CV, applying for a job with a potential employer, and getting invited for an interview, are already huge achievements that should be acknowledged considering that only a select few get invited to interview.

The next step is the most important part of the process – preparing for the interview. Even the most prepared and qualified candidates can feel unsettled by a difficult question posed by the interviewer.

Compiled in this article are 8 tips on how to answer some of the toughest interview questions.

How do you answer the toughest “personality” interview questions?

1) Tell me about yourself.

This question is one of the most common and would usually come on early in the interview. Candidates would typically go on for 5-7 minutes discussing subjects that may be irrelevant to the job and this is not necessarily what the interviewer is looking for. Imagine it as an elevator pitch, no more than 1-2 minutes focusing on your work experience, education, what you can bring to the table and perhaps a hobby.

2) What is your biggest weakness?

With this question, the interviewer is trying to test your abilities when faced with a difficult question and it is a test to see how you respond. The candidate should avoid using a good trait and trying to pose it as a weakness like “I am a perfectionist” – it will take the interviewer a second to realise that you just cannot identify your own weaknesses.

3) What is your biggest strength?

The fact that you have been invited for an interview most likely means that you already have strengths that aligns with the job position, but it is different when it is heard from the candidate. There are two things to focus on here; firstly, do not mention too many strengths because it will just sound like you are boasting, up to 3 is sufficient. Secondly, make sure the strengths mentioned are relevant to the job. When applying for an HR job for example, you wouldn’t use digital marketing as a strength.

How do you answer the toughest job-related interview questions?

4) How do you handle stress?

Unfortunately, stress is a common component in the workplace. Employers ask this question to know that you will handle a stressful situation with a positive attitude especially if stress is an integral part of the role you have applied for. Mishandling stressful situations could have a negative impact in the workplace as a whole so it is important for employers to know that the candidate will handle the situation with grace.

The best way to tackle this question is by explaining a stressful situation you handled well in the past.

5) Why have you been out of work for so long?

This question is asked because candidates that have gaps between their work experience are usually put in the “bad pile”, however, the fact that you have been called in for an interview means the employer is giving you a chance to explain yourself rather than assuming the worst (being fired).

The best approach in this case would be to be honest rather than make up a story. If you have a gap due to personal reasons, explain yourself and then emphasise on why now is the right time for you to go back into the market.

6) Why are you leaving your current job?

Candidates need to be very careful with this question because employers are waiting to see if you will speak badly of your previous employer which will reflect on your character. It will not benefit you at all if you complain about your previous job or colleagues.

As opposed to discussing the employer, focus more on yourself and your experience in your previous role. Something like “I have gained a lot of experience from my previous role and am now ready for a new challenge.” This way you show the interviewer that you are willing and ready to take on new challenges and bring over what you have learnt to the new role.

How do you answer the toughest future-related interview questions?

7) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Candidates often feel that they are obliged to say that they want to be with the company they have applied for however this should not always be the case. If you sincerely feel that way, then build the career path you see yourself in at this company. Otherwise, you can take a different approach and focus on something you would like to develop over the next five years.

This question is usually asked to find out whether you plan to stay in the company long-term or not because the hiring process is not as easy as it seems and is very time consuming for the employer.

8) Why should I hire you?

Candidates usually hesitate when answering this question as they don’t want to oversell themselves or sound arrogant. The best thing to do is to just add on what you have already said throughout the interview and make sure you haven’t left anything important out. It is vital to highlight the strengths and experiences you have that will complement the role you have applied for.

A new public transport system was recently launched in Cyprus to expand the Bus network across Cyprus and bring it up to European standards. The newly created Cyprus Public Transport was established by the MLKP consortium comprising of Malta Public Transport and Kapnos Airport Shuttle Ltd and is serving routes in Nicosia and Larnaca as of 4th July 2020. The contract for the services was awarded by the Cyprus Ministry of Transport and is for the next ten years.

Malta Public Transport Chairman, Felipe Cosmen, commented on the launch of operating a public transport service in Cyprus: “Thanks to our success in Malta we just launched a similar bus service in Cyprus which started to operate last weekend. We have managed to export the successful public transport model from Malta to another European country.”

GRS Group the leading recruitment, payroll and Outsourcing company in Cyprus, was selected for its high-quality service and experience with large Outsourcing projects in the Energy, Retail, Banking, and Construction sectors. Lorraine Piggott Brown, Senior Operations Manager said ‘having worked in a number of industry horizontals in Cyprus we were delighted to be partnering with CPT as it was our first Outsourced Project in the Transport sector in Cyprus’.

The project began just before lockdown and involved the transfer of over 650 employees to the new company which involved face to face meeting across Cyprus. However, as the pandemic spread and became more serious, face to face meetings had to be replaced; innovation and technology took over. Project Manager Annita Paliou said ‘it happened very quickly, and we had to think on our feet as the Health & Safety of the CPT & GRS staff was off paramount importance. As things developed, we realised that we would have to replace the face to face meetings and use a blend of technology including What’s App, Viber, Zoom and Microsoft Teams’. Organization on the project was key to ensure the 4th July deadline was met and all the information and paperwork for each staff member had been gathered, recorded and processed to ensure a seamless transition for the employees to the new company Cyprus Public Transport.

With the 4th July target achieved successfully and the employees on-boarded by GRS it was the then over to Fairfax Yeaman, a member of the GRS Group to take over, as they were selected as the outsourced payroll provider to run and manage payroll for the new company and its employees.

The CEO of GRS Group, Steve Slocombe, commented on the partnering with CPT “We are extremely pleased to be offering our expertise and services to such a premium client. With the advent of Covid we faced some unprecedented challenges with the project but due to our organised and agile approach we turned the project into a success. This of course was all down to the project team and I would personally like to thank them all: Lorraine, Annita, Christiana, Laura S and Laura C for their outstanding performance and resilience in such a strange and difficult time.”

When you have a vacancy in your company, how do you know who is the right candidate is for the position and your team? With the help of a job description, of course! Before conducting interviews and making your final decision, a detailed job description is a must to attract the most qualified candidates.

However, job descriptions do not only serve one purpose. They accomplish many essential roles within the operation of a business such as:

Functioning as a guide for interview questions

Provides information and content to be included in Advertisements

Provides a starting point for employee reviews, setting goals, growth paths, and salary increases

Continue to read below to learn about the three roles which we consider to be the most crucial functions of job descriptions within the operations of a business.

What to include in a job description?

Before we dive further into three more essential roles of job descriptions, we believe it is necessary to first to discuss what you should include in your job descriptions. Each one should include the following:

Title, position summary and an explanation of duties

Education level and desired experience

Essential skills required for the position

Required certificates and licenses

Physical requirements (if applicable)

Work environment and culture

Team structure (who they report to)

Helps to Determine Fit

The modern job seeker no longer selects their future employers based on just an attractive salary. The new generation of workers is more socially aware, and they want to work for a company that shares similar values to theirs. Companies who want to stand out from the rest and want to attract the best talent can do so using the job description. By including information about the company culture and its values within the job posting, they can attract candidates whose values align with theirs.

Finding the right fit is a two-way road- meaning that companies also have an interest in attracting candidates whose character and goals fit theirs. When employees and companies share ideals with their employers, they are less likely to leave for new opportunities. Shared values help personnel feel more connected to their work, and so they stay longer with their current employers.

Clarifies Expectations

The job description is vital because it spells out to the employee exactly what you expect of them from the moment they apply to the job. It helps job seekers to decide whether they have the right qualifications for the position and the human resources team to determine what skills, education, and experience they should look for in a new employee.

The job description is also key to helping other team members understand the role and responsibilities of new colleagues. When everyone has a strong understanding of what each member is capable of and which duties they are responsible for, there is less miscommunication among teammates and easier collaboration. It acts as a guide for the training of new employees. The job description will tell supervisors which the critical skills of a role are so that they can create a “lesson plan” for new hires.

Protects the organization

Every employer must comply with employment laws. Writing a job description- although it is not legally, required-can help companies defend themselves against legal action from an employee or former employee if the duties and responsibilities are clearly explained in a job description. Any company that operates within the EU must follow EU employment law, which includes legislation on working conditions (ex. working hours), workplace equality, employment contracts, gender equality and, many more.

Do you have open vacancies in your company that you need to fill Or gaps in your HR Policies ? Then you need to speak to the experts in HR & recruiting – GRS Recruitment.
