GRS were recently invited to guest speak on the topic ‘English for the Workplace’ at the University of Cyprus Language Centre. Dr Constantinos Tsouris the class and English sector coordinator said that “...this is the most advanced course offered at the Language Centre and having speakers from GRS for the second year in a row has been a real bonus.  The depth and wealth of experience and practical tips they have shared with us are invaluable; it is one thing laying the theory to students and another thing having people who can provide hands-on knowledge.”

The GRS presenters Philippa Stephanou, Business Manager and Nikoletta Constantinou, Recruitment Consultant, delivered the presentation to the University of Cyprus students with a focus on how to write and correctly format a CV, how to conduct a job search, how to apply for jobs, the impact of social media in the recruitment process and in addition provided valuable interview preparation tips.

Philippa Stephanou expressed that “even from personal experience, students are not always aware or  informed of how to create and format a CV correctly with key information that will enable them to stand out from the hundreds of other students simultaneously applying for the same jobs or internships. Through our extensive experience of screening candidate CVs on a daily basis and via our CV Writing and Coaching Service it was truly the best way to help the students prepare their CV and coach them in relation to their job search and more importantly how to prepare and make a positive impression in an interview”.

The presentation was interactive and upbeat with role plays to demonstrate to the students the correct and incorrect conduct of body language during an interview, appropriate dress code, communication skills and example interview questions. Furthermore, valuable advice was given to demonstrate appropriate online content particularly with the increased usage of Facebook and LinkedIn. Guidance was demonstrated to ensure that the students understood the impact of what they share online and how this can impact their job search negatively or positively.

Nikoletta Constantinou said “It was a great experience and very encouraging to see how engaged the students were and their positive participation throughout was encouraging during the sharing of our knowledge, guidance and experiences. We truly hope that this presentation has offered value and guidance to the students and that these tips will assist them in increasing their chances of securing employment and developing their future careers.”

Dr Contantinos Tsouris commented that “the materials and content fitted the syllabus perfectly, our students were allowed ample time at the end to engage in conversation with the presenters and address various issues that concerned them.  I was happy to see that they did take this opportunity and posed a number of questions, all of which were adequately answered by Philippa and Nicoletta.   In all, this was an enjoyable experience for my students and myself – hopefully for our speakers also – and I do hope that this relationship continues into next year.”
